Neck Pain Non Surgical Treatment Options

There are many treatment options for those suffering from neck pain. There is conventional medical care where the family doctor will usually prescribe a muscle relaxant, anti-inflammatory, and/or pain killer to help patients through episodes of acute neck pain. However, many patients with neck pain have been through the process of treatments associated with medications and simply cannot tolerate the adverse side effects of stomach pain common with anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Nuprin, Mediprin, etc.), Aleve (Naproxen), or aspirin. Others don't like the groggy, drunk-like feelings associated with pain killers or the sleepiness associated with muscle relaxants. Therefore, these patients often turn to complementary / alternative care.

As noted in the May, 2009 issue of Consumer's Report for low back pain, chiropractic was the most sought after form of treatment, but there has been no extensive review of neck pain regarding evidence-based treatment approaches - at least not until February, 2008. An international "team" representing 9 countries screened over 31,000 titles of articles published between 1980 and 2006, reviewed more than 1200 articles and eventually reported on 552 studies in their final report. Their findings included the following:

• In the US, 54% utilized complementary (alternative) treatment approaches compared to 37% that obtained conventional medical care.
• Neck pain was the 2nd most common reason Americans obtained chiropractic care.
• Chiropractic was found to be the most frequently reported form of treatment for upper back or neck pain (ahead of massage therapy, relaxation therapy, acupuncture).
• Those who obtained complementary AND conventional medical care were much more likely to perceive the complementary/alternative therapy as being helpful (61% vs. 6.4% for neck conditions and 39.1% vs. 19% for headaches).
• Women more commonly obtained care than men for neck/shoulder pain (29% vs. 18% men) over a 4-6 year time frame.
• Manual therapy (mobilization, manipulation, stretching) was associated with greater pain reduction in the short-term among patients with acute whiplash when compared with usual medical care, soft collars, passive modalities, or general advice.
• For non-whiplash neck pain (without arm radiating pain), manipulation or mobilization, exercise, low level laser therapy (LLLT), and "...perhaps acupuncture..." were reported as more effective than no treatment, sham, or other alternative interventions.
• For both whiplash and non-traumatic neck pain, supervised exercise with or without manual therapy was favored over usual medical care or no care.

What does all this mean? Simple! Everyone who is suffering from neck or upper back pain should seek chiropractic care which includes manipulation, mobilization, exercise training, and activity modifying advice, as these approaches have been found to be more effective than usual medical care! Why waste time with a "wait and watch" with or without drug intervention approach when the evidence favors chiropractic related interventions. If you, a friend, or a loved one is struggling with neck or upper back pain, we will properly assess your condition and administer the appropriate care that is required. We will coordinate care with other health care services when necessary. This recommendation may represent one of most significant acts of kindness you can offer those that you truly care about. Facts About Psoriatic Arthritis Treatment

Psoriatic arthritis is a painful and potentially debilitating condition that affects nearly 1 million people in the United States. Determining the appropriate treatment can be a complicated matter because there are several types of arthritis, and consequently several types of psoriatic arthritis treatment.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin, ibuprofen, and several prescription drugs, help to decrease inflammation and reduce joint pain. Certain NSAIDs can cause serious stomach problems in some patients, depending on dosage and length of treatment. Certain NSAIDs called COX-2 inhibitors were developed to minimize stomach discomfort, but they are more expensive than other NSAIDs and have certain significant risks of their own. Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are meant to slow joint damage, and to slow or halt the progression of the disease. Biologics, one type of DMARDs, target specific internal biological conditions that cause psoriatic arthritis.

Several systemic drugs can also be used to treat arthritis. Some immunosuppressive drugs meant for treating psoriasis provide some relief for psoriatic arthritis sufferers, but they sometimes pose risks of liver damage. Retinoids used to treat severe psoriasis may also help some people with this type of arthritis, though they carry some potentially severe risks with long-term use, including birth defects. Sulfasalazine, a sulfa drug used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases, is sometimes effective for psoriatic patients, but it also bears several possible side effects.

Other alternative forms of treatment have been reported to relieve some symptoms. Some dietary supplements have reportedly helped some patients. Physical therapy and exercise has proven to be a useful way to maintain strength and range of motion with minimal joint damage. Some patients have also found that stress reduction, dietary changes, and therapeutic massage have helped with symptom relief and disease management.

Determining the appropriate psoriatic arthritis treatment for any given patient requires careful consultation with a physician. There are many potential sources of relief for arthritis sufferers, but they each carry certain risks and side effects. It is important to consider the specific needs of the individual patient when determining a course of treatment for this complicated disease.

Guinea Pig Health – Respiratory Problems

Guinea pigs are a little more delicate than some other pets. If one wants to prevent serious health conditions it is best to monitor your guinea pig on a daily basis as some potentially life threatening symptoms can progress faster than one might think. Here is a list of common respiratory problems and an explanation of what each symptom may mean. Remember that if you are worried that your guinea pig may be ill, it is always best to visit a veterinarian for a professional diagnosis and treatment.

Runny nose
Nasal discharge and/or nose rubbing are a sign that your guinea pig needs to see a doctor. Keep in mind that guinea pigs are not like humans and thus not susceptible to the common cold. For this reason make sure your guinea pig gets checked out as this could be a sign of a bacterial infection.

Sneezing
Sneezing in and of itself is not inherently bad. Inhaling a little dust here or particle there can cause us all to sneeze. However if you suspect an irritant is responsible for the sneezing be sure to rule out bedding allergies. Many types of commonly sold guinea pig bedding can cause problems such as soft wood and hay that has gathered dust. Consider changing the bedding to a recommended type of bedding like Timothy hay, careFresh, or crown pellet bedding. Avoid known problematic bedding like pine or cedar shavings. Also note that known safe bedding such as corn cob bedding can easily grow mold so make sure you are keeping the cage area clean and sticking to a routine of cleaning once per week. If the sneezing persists after switching out bedding and cleaning your guinea pigs' cage please have this checked by a professional.

Coughing
Coughing, like sneezing, can be a sign of breathing in something one shouldn't. Light coughing should be perceived as normal unless taken to an extreme. In many cases this can be a sign, like sneezing, that your guinea pig is having trouble with his or her bedding. Lots of coughing can be a sign of infection or illness. Be especially careful if you notice you piggy is struggling to breathe as this can indicate serious problems.

Struggling to breathe
Struggling to breathe is a very serious condition which must not be ignored. Lung congestion is likely the cause and can lead to infection and pneumonia if left untreated.

Flu Treatment For Kids: Coconut Water Shaved Ice

Coconut water shaved ice is a great flu treatment for kids because it helps replace lost electrolytes that are drained from your child's body when they're fighting the flu or any other sickness. The flu is worst for younger kids because they have so little life experience. They don't know what sick is. One day they're running around the playground with their friends, the next, boom! They're sick. When you're a little kid, having the flu for the first of second time, is one of the worst things you will experience in your young life. Your body aches, you have a hot fever, but cold sweats, you can't eat or drink and when you do, you throw up. Then, you throw up some more, and you're like, "what is going on? This sucks!!! Waaaahhhhh, make it better mommmyyy!!!"

Keeping food and beverages down without throwing them up when you have the flu is hard for younger kids because of the viral effects, the flu has on their sensitive little stomachs. When holding down water becomes a chore on your little ones body, chances are, they aren't getting enough food or water to stay properly hydrated and fight the flu. When I was a kid, my mom used to give me ice chips or popsicles so I could rehydrate slowly, without upsetting my stomach. It gave me the little bit of the moisture that my body needed to stay hydrated, without making me throw-up. However, her method could have been more effective. (I love you mom, you're the best!!!) In her defense, the benefits of coconut water weren't that highly circulated 25 years ago, when I was a little whipper snapper. Like mentioned above, when your body looses electrolytes through fighting the flu, your body is going to dehydrate, especially if you can't hold down food or liquids. When you're dehydrated, your body doesn't operate at full capacity, hence, your child's body will not be fighting the flu at maximum strength.

Coconut water is 100% all natural and has the same electrolyte balance as our blood. In the South Pacific Islands during World War II, coconut water was used by both sides of the war and intravenously injected into the veins of injured and dehydrated soldiers when military doctors on the field were out of blood plasma. Coconut water is called the "fluid of life for a reason," it has literally saved lives. Not only that, but it tastes good and one 11.2 ounce serving, has more potassium than two and a half bananas. The flavor reminds me of the milk in the bottom of my cereal bowl when I eat Honey Nut Cheerios, only not as sweet, with a much thinner texture than milk. Some of the additional health benefits of coconut water that make it a great flu treatment for kids are:

It helps calm the stomach. It helps rehydrate your body helping eliminate cramping, aching, dizziness and headaches. It helps detoxify your system, helping flush the sickness and toxins out of your child's body. It helps strengthen immunity, helping prevent the flu, other sickness and disease. It's 100% all natural.

Hopefully your sick child can hold down food and beverages, so he/she can take advantage of drinking coconut water to help their bodies fight the flu. If not, coconut water shaved ice is a great flu treatment for kids because it melts slowly, slowly making its way down into their stomach, helping them rehydrate, while preventing any stomach discomfort. It's also a much more effective alternative than ice chips because of the added electrolyte boost and overall health benefits that coconut water provides.

Diabetes Medication: Can Your Treatment Cause Hepatitis?

In 1997, the medical community was prescribing a new drug to treat type 2 diabetes. By March 2000, this drug was removed from the market because it was causing hepatitis and liver disease. Drugs in this family are still being prescribed to treat diabetes. Are there any risks?

Troglitazone was allegedly a miracle drug. It decreased incidence of type 2 diabetes by up to 75% compared with a control group. It helped relieve many complications that can come from insulin resistance, including certain ovarian diseases. It was prescribed to use with insulin, with other diabetes medications, and by itself for therapy. Only after 3 years did the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) realize that troglitazone caused severe liver damage. Troglitazone was available under the brand names Rezulin and Romozin.

Troglitazone is in the thiazolidinedione family of diabetes medications. The thiazolidinedione family includes pioglitazone and rosiglitazone. Pioglitazone is marketed as Actos by Takeda Pharmaceuticals; Rosiglitazone is marketed as Avandia by GlaxoSmithKline. Both of these medications are currently on the market.

Neither Avandia nor Actos have been associated with an increase in liver disease. However, both of these medications may cause an increase risk of heart attack and stroke. It is important that you discuss any concerns that you have with your doctor before undertaking any treatment.

Both Avandia and Actos can be used as monotherapies (by themselves) to help increase the body's sensitivity to insulin. They can also be used with insulin treatment, for type 2 diabetics who are insulin dependent. Avandia and Actos can be used in combination with other diabetes medications, such as biguanides (such as metformin) and sulfonylureas. Avandia is available in pre-mixed combinations called Avandamet and Avandaryl.

In order to minimize your risk of side effects on diabetes medication from the thiazolidinedione family, such as Actos and Avandia, it is important to follow your doctor's directions. This means that you will have to follow your diet and exercise regimen. It also means that you will have to limit your alcohol intake.

You will not be able to take a thiazolidinedione if you have a history of liver disease, or if you have a history of heart disease.

Doctors typically monitor patients' livers when they are on Avandia, Actos, or other thiazolidinedione because of the previous scare with Rezulin. Your liver function can be monitored with regular blood tests, often each month or every other month. Be sure to visit your health care professional regularly to have your check ups.

The basic element of diabetes management, no matter your treatment, is keeping a healthy diet and exercise. This can often prevent you from having to take medications to treat your diabetes, or it can help you minimize the amount of medication that you need. Prevention is often the best medicine of all.
